Brothers Junior Rugby League Football Club (BJRLFC) Brisbane

GRADING OF PLAYERS POLICY

PREAMBLE

The ultimate aim of the club is to nurture players who love the game and improve their skills.  Each player is encouraged and developed to realise their full potential as a footballer.  As part of the process of developing footballers, it is important that players are graded in teams which best suits the needs of the players and the club.  The grading of players is the responsibility of the club’s coaching panel.

  1. By signing with BJRLFC parents place faith in the club to grade the player in the most suitable team.  The club acts in good faith in grading players, with safety of all players the first priority.  The responsibility of grading players ultimately lies with the club.
  2. In teams aged U6 to U9, the responsibility of team selection lies with the coaches.  Where several teams exist in an age group, teams should be selected to be roughly equal in ability.  At this age, it is acceptable to place players in teams with their friends or school-mates.  The main aims with these teams are for players to learn the skills of the game and have fun.
  3. In teams aged U10, coaches are again encouraged to make selections, with input from the club as required.  The club still aims to keep teams relatively even.  For the Shane Webcke Shield at the end of the season, coaches are asked to collaborate to pick the strongest possible U10 team.
  4. In teams aged U11 and above, selection must be done via trial matches.  All players with a reasonable chance of selection in higher teams should be given the opportunity to demonstrate their ability.
  5. In teams U11 and above, it is imperative that all coaches collaborate in team selection.  No coach is to name a team without first discussing selections with other coaches from the same age group, this particularly relates to the nomination of core 14 players.
  6. In teams U11 and above, it is normal practice that the coach of the highest graded team has first choice of players.  It is important that higher grade coaches do not ‘stockpile’ players to the point that lower grade coaches are unable to select a team.
  7. When nominating core players, the club will produce a document which is to be completed and signed by all coaches to indicate that all coaches within an age group are aware of which players are nominated as core players.
  8. Any dispute about player selection must be taken to coaching directors for resolution.  Failing this avenue, the President BJRLFC will attempt resolution.
  9. In teams U11 and up, players must be selected in the highest graded team they are capable of playing.  The club strongly discourages selection of players in grades which are clearly below their ability, as this is not in the spirit of the game.
  10. The club appreciates and encourages the assistance of parents, but coaches are asked to think very carefully about selection of assistant coaches and managers.  In teams U11 and up, players are not to be selected in a team simply because their parent nominated to assist.  Suitability of the player for that team is based on their ability, not their parent’s willingness to assist the team.
